It was about 8 pm on a Monday and even though we were guaranteed a dry day, it hadn't stopped pouring down rain! James and I were sitting there talking about the sports, at the ready for the seventh call to come in. Eventually we got the call from a girl on a company expedition who had gone to the BP petrol garage in Tacker Street and put petrol in her diesel shiny Honda Ridgeline hire car. The unfortunate thing was somewhat troubled by the sounds of it, saying "I can not believe that I've messed up the car! I'm so accustomed to filling my petrol vehicle that I had didn't remember I was driving a diesel!" We advised her to take it easy and not to worry, also that things like this can happen. She managed to maneuver the vehicle into a protected spot and, seeing as it was only a few miles from the office, we could arrive at the customer rather quickly. The wrong fuel was cleaned up and removed and she was able to go home to the Travelodge she was residing at. Despite the fact we got fairly wet, it was all worthwhile seeing her drive off contented and not so anxious. Yet another fuel drain in Somerset well done in my mind!

The 3 things you NEED to know about petrol in diesel!

AdBlue In Diesel

All around Somerset we are encountering more and more occurrences of AdBlue contamination wherein somebody has put AdBlue inside their diesel tank. This is to a degree stemming from motorists not being aware of the way to to make use of (take note: it is in reality not a fuel additive), and to some extent simply because the filler caps for diesel and AdBlue are generally directly adjacent to each other on the automobile.

Now, what exactly is the situation with putting AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Because AdBlue is primarily ionised water, it is nearly as good as pouring water in to your tank. Diesel and water do not ever blend in the least and trying to run a diesel car on water cannot work. Apart from this, the urea is highly corrosive to fuel system pipes and seals and is more prone to crystallisation, obstructing injectors and fuel filters. If you find you put AdBlue in a fuel tank remove it at the earliest opportunity. And most certainly take care not to crank the car - not even to shift it off of the pump. In the event that you have started the vehicle you will most likely have to have the full fuel system purged and filters replaced.

In case you discover yourself to be in this scenario don’t panic! Contact us, the UK’s Premium fuel contamination service. Our engineers have the technical competence and experience to have you back on your way promptly and efficiently, no mess, no hassle.

Waste Fuel Disposal

Have an old fuel reservoir at the back of your garden containing unwanted, useless or degraded fuel? We are able to help you to dispose of it. We have been called out to a number of domestic and commercial properties in Somerset to deal with draining and recycling fuel storages. We are registered by the Environment Agency to be able to extract and dispose of waste fuel safely and legally.

No matter if the fuel storage is a subterranean reservoir, a mobile bowser, or possibly even some containers in a garage, if we can access it, we could certainly empty it.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
